Do Flat Irons Damage Your Hair?

I’ve been in the habit of straightening my hair almost everyday since I was thirteen years old, which means I’ve been doing it for over 10 years now! But lately I’ve been concerned that all this cumulative heat damage could end up really taking its toll on my hair. I don’t want to end up prematurely bald! So I decided to do a little detective work in order to find out whether a farouk flat iron are really bad for your hair.

The conclusion I came to was this: It depends on the type of flat iron you use, and how you use it. I always use GHD flat irons, which is great because they make high quality ceramic irons that seal the moisture into the hair shaft as opposed to sucking it out and/or frying your hair. I recommend GHD flat irons to all of my friends who ask my opinion on what type of flat iron to use. Never use an iron with a metal plate - you’ll just end up cooking your hair!

Another important thing to keep in mind is to never, ever flat iron wet hair, unless you have one of the specially made wet-to-dry GHD flat irons. You’ll just end up with a frizzy, dried out mop of hair! You should also take occasional breaks from straightening your hair, which I always do on the weekends. So I guess I’m in the clear! Woo hoo!
